Program Overview
This Web cast is a video of a dinner meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia on March 21, 2007. Experts in the field of cancer and chemotherapy complications review the association of management of treatment induced effects to the survival of patients with head and neck cancer. New directions and guidelines for the use of red cell growth factors are discussed in detail and very recent data are reviewed.

Target Audience
This educational activity is designed for medical oncologists, internal medicine specialists, other physicians and physicians in training, nurses, and pharmacists involved in the care of patients with cancer and who manage complications of cancer therapy. No specific knowledge other than a general understanding of medicine is required for successful participation in this educational activity.

Educational Objectives
After successfully completing this continuing medical education program, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the etiology and factors affecting the development of common serious complications of cancer therapy, including mucositis, neutropenia, and chemotherapy-related bone loss
  • Evaluate patients with cancer for the development of mucositis and neutropenia and initiate appropriate prophylactic and preemptive measures
  • Understand the mechanism of action, indications, and administration of new agents for the treatment of mucositis, neutropenia and chemotherapy-related bone loss in cancer patients with hematologic and solid tumors
  • Appropriately assess cancer patients for chemotherapy-induced bone loss and institute appropriate treatment
