Course Description
Target Audience
This educational activity is specifically
designed for medical oncologists,
dermatologists, and other physicians,
physicians-in-training, and healthcare
professionals interested in and/or
involved in the care of patients
with melanoma and its consequences.
Educational Objectives
After successful completion of this
activity, participants should be
able to:
- Describe the basic concepts of immunotherapy and how each type can be used as a treatment modality in oncology.
- Discuss the role immune tolerance plays in allowing the growth and spread of cancer cells.
- Explain the specific role of CTLA-4 in maintaining immune tolerance and how inhibiting its function can be used in the treatment of malignant melanoma.
- Compare and contrast emerging biological agents, primarily vaccines and cytokines, that are used to stimulate and target a patient’s own immune response against a tumor and are currently in trials for use against melanoma.
